ChatGPT Launches: What Conversational AI Means for Your Business
OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public on November 30. Within five days it had over a million users. Two weeks in, the conversation in business and technology circles has shifted in a way that’s genuinely different from any AI moment in the past decade. It’s not the underlying model that’s new — GPT-3.5, the substrate, has been available via OpenAI’s API for some time, and the broader GPT-3 family has been in production at thousands of companies since 2020. What’s new is the chat interface, the instruction-following behavior, and the accessibility. A capability that was previously reachable only to developers willing to learn prompt engineering is now reachable to anyone who can type a question.
The honest December 2022 observation is that the launch is significant, the implications are real, and most enterprises are about to rediscover how hard it is to plan around a category that’s evolving in weeks rather than years.
What ChatGPT Actually Is
A useful clarification, since several different things are getting blurred in the public conversation:
ChatGPT is a product built on top of GPT-3.5, OpenAI’s current generation of language model. The product layer adds two things that matter:

Factual accuracy is uneven. ChatGPT confidently produces wrong answers on factual questions outside its training distribution, on recent events (the model’s training cutoff is well before today), and on questions where the right answer requires precise lookup rather than reasoning. The confident-wrong failure mode is the most consequential limit.
Citations are not real. Asked to provide sources, ChatGPT produces plausible-looking citations that frequently don’t exist. Anyone using the output for research has to verify everything.
Latency is not real-time. Sub-100ms response budgets aren’t achievable; multi-second responses are typical. Voice interfaces and high-throughput chat experiences need engineering beyond off-the-shelf API consumption.
Long, multi-turn conversations drift. The context window is finite; long sessions lose earlier context. State management for long conversations is engineering work the product layer doesn’t fully solve.
Structured output is unreliable. Producing valid JSON, specific schemas, or specific lengths reliably is harder than producing prose. The failure mode “almost the right format” is common enough to require validation and retry logic.
The Risk Surface for Enterprise Use
A few concerns enterprises should be thinking about now, two weeks in:
Hallucination in customer-facing contexts. A wrong answer to a customer is worse than no answer. Deployments that surface model output to customers without grounding, citation, or human review carry real risk.
Data leakage. Pasting confidential information into a third-party chat interface to get help with it sends that information to a third party. Most enterprises don’t yet have policies on this; they need them quickly.
Intellectual property questions. Code generated by the model, content drafted by the model, derivative works that incorporate model output — the legal status is being negotiated in real time. Enterprise procurement and legal teams need to be paying attention.
Prompt injection. A document or email containing malicious instructions can subvert a model that’s processing it. The attack class is being actively explored by security researchers; defenses are early.
Quality variance. The model’s behavior is not deterministic. The same prompt can produce different answers; behavior can change with model updates. Production deployments need evaluation discipline that captures this.
The 2023 Question: How Does This Compose with the Existing Stack?
The deeper strategic question for most enterprises is not “should we use ChatGPT?” but “how do foundation models compose with the data, applications, and processes we’ve already invested in?”
The pattern that’s already visible in early-adopter deployments:
The foundation model becomes a layer in the application architecture, not a replacement for it. It interprets natural language, summarizes content, drafts text, and synthesizes across sources. The structured data systems, the business logic, the workflow engines, and the operational disciplines remain in place. The model is one component in the stack; it doesn’t replace the stack.
Retrieval augmentation — grounding the model in enterprise content rather than trusting its training-data knowledge — emerges quickly as a default pattern. The model interprets questions and synthesizes answers, but the source-of-truth content comes from the enterprise’s own data through some retrieval layer.
Evaluation and guardrails become real engineering disciplines. Sample real questions, capture real answers, judge them as a continuous practice. Define what the model is allowed to do, what it should refuse, how it should handle ambiguity.
Cost, latency, and data residency become design constraints. API consumption is fine for prototypes; production at scale needs deliberate planning across these dimensions.
Practical Recommendations for Q1 2023
A few patterns worth committing to now:
Establish a policy on what employees can paste into third-party chat interfaces. This needs to happen quickly, before incidents force the conversation. The policy should cover both ChatGPT and the inevitable competitors.
Identify two or three internal use cases to pilot deliberately. Drafting, summarization, internal Q&A over enterprise content. Pick low-stakes, high-value cases to learn the operational discipline before tackling customer-facing deployments.
Invest in retrieval and grounding now. The model is only as good as what it can ground in. Embedding the right enterprise content with appropriate access controls is the infrastructure project of Q1 2023.
Build evaluation as a first-class capability. Without evaluation, “the model works” is an opinion. With evaluation, it’s a measurement that can be tracked over time and across model updates.
Watch the competitive landscape. OpenAI is not the only player; the next several quarters will see substantial moves from Anthropic, Google, Microsoft (which is a major investor in OpenAI and has its own deep AI investments), Meta, and the open-source ecosystem. Early commitments to a single provider may not age well.
