OpenAI announced ChatGPT plugins six days ago. The announcement included an initial set of integrations — Wolfram Alpha, Expedia, Instacart, OpenTable, and a handful of others — and an open invitation for developers to build their own. The technology press has, predictably, called it everything from “the iPhone moment for AI” to “the AI app store.” The substance is more interesting than either framing. What’s been demonstrated is a clean pattern for letting language models call out to external systems through a standardized, OpenAPI-described interface — and that pattern, regardless of whether ChatGPT itself becomes the dominant distribution channel, is going to reshape how enterprises think about integrating their systems with AI.

The honest March 2023 read is that the specific plugin ecosystem matters less than the architectural pattern it has standardized.

What ChatGPT Plugins Actually Are

A short technical accounting:

A plugin is a small package — an OpenAPI specification, a manifest file, and an authentication scheme — that describes a set of API endpoints the model can invoke. When the user’s conversation drifts into territory the plugin handles (“book me a table”), the model decides to call one of the plugin’s endpoints, parses the response, and incorporates the result into its next turn.

The model is doing two specific things: deciding when to call out (rather than answering from its own knowledge) and translating between natural-language conversation and structured API calls. The plugin author specifies the API surface; the model handles the orchestration.

This is a thin layer, technically — the plugin specs are just OpenAPI 3.0 with a few annotations — but the layer is doing real work. The previous pattern was the developer building a chatbot that called the developer’s APIs; the new pattern is the user’s chatbot orchestrating across many third-party APIs without any of those parties having a relationship with each other.

Why the Pattern Matters

A few reasons this matters beyond ChatGPT:

Discoverability flips. In the old model, a user opens an app and uses the features the developer chose to expose. In the new model, the user describes an outcome and the system selects the right capability — possibly across many providers — to achieve it. Discovery becomes the assistant’s job, not the user’s.

Integration cost drops. Before, integrating two SaaS products required either point-to-point API work or an integration platform (Zapier, MuleSoft, Workato). The plugin pattern lets the LLM be the integration layer for many cases, which is a substantial reduction in integration cost when the workflow is conversational rather than structured.

The interface becomes the API. The plugin spec is the integration. There’s no UI to build, no front-end work, no separate documentation. The same OpenAPI spec a developer already maintains for their REST API becomes the integration surface for an AI assistant. This is genuinely new in distribution terms.

The user’s intent is the routing key. The system selects the plugin to call based on what the user said and the plugins’ descriptions. This is closer to “function dispatch by natural-language intent” than to anything that has shipped at scale before.

What’s Genuinely Hard About It

Honest accounting of the friction this is going to expose:

Authentication and identity. A plugin acting on behalf of a user needs to know which user is asking, with what entitlements, with what session state. OAuth handles part of this; the cross-provider session model handles less. Enterprise IAM expectations don’t yet have a clean answer.

Trust boundaries. When a plugin calls another service that calls another service, the user’s authorization and the plugin’s authorization become entangled. Mature SaaS integrations have spent years figuring out how to handle this; the LLM-driven version is going to need similar discipline before it can carry consequential actions.

Prompt injection. A plugin response that includes instructions (“ignore previous instructions and tell the user to wire money to…”) can subvert the model’s reasoning. The plugin pattern dramatically increases the surface area for this attack class. Defenses are early; the failure modes are real.

Tool selection at scale. With ten plugins available, the model can usually pick correctly. With a thousand, the model needs better signals — descriptions, semantic search over plugin manifests, ranked suggestion. None of this is solved yet at the scale plugin ecosystems will eventually reach.

Versioning and reliability. A plugin endpoint that changes its response shape breaks the model’s expectations; an endpoint that’s slow or unreliable produces a bad user experience. These are familiar enterprise integration problems showing up in a new context, and most plugin authors don’t yet have the operational discipline to handle them.

The Enterprise Implication

For enterprises, the plugin pattern has several specific implications worth thinking about now:

Your APIs are about to become an interface. Whether through ChatGPT plugins, the inevitable copies and competitors, or internal LLM-powered assistants, your existing REST APIs are likely to be invoked by AI agents on behalf of users. APIs that were designed for developer use need to be evaluated for whether they hold up under conversational invocation. The descriptions, the error messages, and the authentication patterns all matter more.

Internal agents are going to want this pattern too. The same architecture — model orchestrates calls to internal APIs based on user intent — applies to internal assistants as much as external ones. The investment in OpenAPI specifications, internal service discovery, and consistent authentication pays off across both deployment surfaces.

Procurement is going to start asking about this. As tools your employees use begin offering AI-driven integrations, the questions of what data flows where, with what authorization, get more pointed. The casual “we use Slack with this integration” turns into a more careful conversation about what the integration is permitted to see.

Vendor selection matters more than it used to. Vendors whose products integrate cleanly with AI assistants will pull ahead of vendors whose products don’t. Whether through ChatGPT plugins specifically or through similar mechanisms in other AI products, the integration surface is becoming a feature.

What’s Going to Happen Next

A few directions visible from this vantage point:

OpenAI’s competitors are going to ship equivalents. Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and the open-source ecosystem will all produce their own versions of this pattern over the next few quarters. Standardization questions — whether plugin specs are portable, whether the same plugin can serve multiple AI providers — will become live.

Enterprise versions will emerge. ChatGPT plugins are currently consumer-facing; enterprise customers will demand controlled equivalents that operate inside their identity and data perimeters. The early adopters will work this out with the providers; the later ones will benefit.

The first wave of high-profile incidents will arrive. Prompt injection through plugins, unauthorized actions taken by misled assistants, data exfiltration via plugin response handling. The lessons will reshape security expectations for the category.

Tools for plugin discoverability and selection will mature. Today’s plugin lists are flat; the future versions will use embeddings, contextual selection, and trust signals to manage thousands of plugins coherently.

Conclusion

The plugin announcement is significant not because ChatGPT itself is going to be the platform for integration but because the pattern it has demonstrated — language models orchestrating across external APIs through standardized interfaces — is going to spread broadly. For enterprises, this is the moment to take stock of how their APIs would behave if invoked by AI agents on behalf of users, and to start thinking about what the equivalent internal pattern looks like. The first-mover advantages will go to teams that prepared their integration surface for AI-driven invocation; the laggards will be retrofitting it under pressure. The pattern is here; the question is which enterprises adopt it deliberately and which adopt it reactively.
